Your second obligation after reading this message is to post an introduction of yourself to the list within 48 hours of subscribing.

The AMPUTEE LISTSERV lives on an IBM mainframe computer located at St.Johns University, Queens, New York.

As of February 1999, the list consists of amputees, prosthetists, medical professionals and concerned family members.

The Amputee Listserv was started by moderator Ian Gregson in Sept 94. There are approx. 300 subscribers with 20 nations represented. The majority are in Canada, USA and Europe. The primary language of the list is English, however other European languages are acceptable, especially if translations are available.

AMPUTEE LISTSERV

Guidelines

----------------------------

MANDATE OF THE LIST

The primary mandate of the Amputee Listserv is "to facilitate communicationbetween amputees on the internet".

Other secondary mandates are to increase medical professional understanding of the amputee's point of view and to help family members with loved ones facing amputation.

The list can also be used by prosthetists to give technical support to amputees, keeping in mind the limitations of the medium and that the support is not self-serving to that prosthetist.

Some suggestions for topics of interest are:

  • Common Experiences
  • The Prosthetic Industry
  • Prosthetics: good and bad experiences
  • Employment
  • Education
  • World Issues: Landmines, Thalidomide, Work Safety practices
  • Relationships
  • Parenthood (parents with amputations - children with amputations)
  • Sport and Recreation and Fitness (inc competitive opportunities)
  • Interesting or humourous stories related to amputation
  • Adaptations (needed or not needed)
  • Are we part of the larger disability community or not ?
  • To use a prosthetic limb or not
  • Amputee Support Groups and meetings
  • Sources of information - magazines, bbs's, etc..

As part of the conditions of joining the list we ask you introduce yourself within 48 hours. We like to know where you are from, your interest in amputation, some personal background and what you have to offer the list. Having anything to offer the list is not a requirement for membership. We also would like to know how the list can benefit you and you it.

---------------------------------

WHAT THE AMPUTEE LISTSERV IS NOT

---------------------------------

DEVOTEES are NOT WELCOME on the St Johns AMPUTEE listserv.

The Amputee Listserv is not a meeting place for people with a sexual interest in amputees. For further explanations please e-mail the moderator. It is not a place for devotees to discuss the kind of amputee that turns them on. Nor is it a forum for people with a sexual interest in amputees to discuss their attraction.

If you are an amputee and have never heard of devotees, you may want to check out http://amputee-online.com/amputee/acrotomophile.html for further clarification.

---------------------------------

HARASSMENT

---------------------------------

Harassment of any kind on the list will not be tolerated. Derogatoryremarks in regard to gender, religion, ethnicity, constitute harassment andwill be dealt with severely. Name calling and personal insults will alsonot be tolerated.

Similary harassment that occurs off the list between list members can also be dealt with via restriction of membership to the amputee listserv.

What consititutes harassment is determined by the harassed, not the harasser.

For more information on harassment on the internet check out http://www.amputee-online.com/freedom/

---------------------------------

ADVERTISING POLICY

---------------------------------

The Amputee Listserv is not a place for prosthetic companies to promote their products. There are opportunities to advertise, please contact the Ian Gregson (igregson@amputee-online.com) for details.

---------------------------------

OTHER GENERAL STUFF

ATTACHMENTS
As a general rule attachments are not allowed to be sent to through the list. The reasons for this being even on a small list like ours (260 or so members), not everyone has the capability to read attachments and there are several methods of attaching that are commonly used. Also some of us actually pay for our internet connection time and don't appreciate receiving an attachment of no use. The solution is to ask one of the list members with web pages to post the picture or sound on the web page.

INTRODUCTIONS
Generally a good way to say hello and get started as contributing member of the list. Best to do this when YOU feel ready. It's also a good way to break the ice with being unfamiliar with e-mail. We are on a first name basis, we'd like to know where you are from and a few things about you, telling us how you became an amp is an option. (We have the seen the whole range here on the list from crocodiles to carcinogens/smoking).

SURVEYS and RESEARCH
From time to time an author or researcher will appear on the list to ask questions for a specific project (be it a book or academic research). Since the list has an open membership practically anyone can join the list with a prepared survey and send it on joining. I strongly recomend NO ONE answer a survey or questions of a research nature that has NOT been cleared by the moderators first. You will know if has been pre-screened because I will include a message from me within the body of the e-mail or at least prior to its arrival on the list. Even with moderator clearance you are under no obligation to answer any questions or complete the survey.

PRIVATE SOLICITATION
Any member of the list can obtain the names and email addresses of ALL list members via the review command to the listserv admin address. Unscrupulous(sp) individuals can use the member list to send private solicitation to list members via email. If you suspect you have been solicited from either your activity or membership on this list please let the moderators know. There are a few things we can do. This also applies to private email of a harassing nature (your definition of harassment, not ours). The quicker we clamp down on unwanted solicitation the better things will be.

Other tips on mail ettiquette include:
Don't quote a whole message in reply when you only have to say "thanks" or "I agree". Some e-mail programs will automatically include the original message in chevrons and add a chevron every time a message is replied to. We have already read the message via the list, we don't need to see the whole thing again.

If you have any other questions please let the list moderator know.
